Why Your Dog Always Wants to Go for a Walk (and Why You Should Take Him!) Go Back

“Want to go for a walk?” In any pet parent’s household, these words are sure to be met with plenty of tail wagging. Going for a walk with plenty of dog waste bags in hand is something dog owners do each and every day, but do you know just how much good it can do for your pup? In honor of National Walk the Dog Day (coming up February 22), we’re sharing five ways getting outside and stretching those legs can help your pup live long and healthy.

Release Energy

Dogs are naturally highly energetic, and they need a healthy outlet to release some of that energy. A daily, 20 to 30 minute walk through dog friendly parks of your neighborhood or community can be just that outlet. Without a way to release pent up energy, pups can become aggressive, destructive or anxious, acting out at home and against their owners.

Reinforce Training

You’ve spent countless hours creating a bond between you and your pup, and you have a few tricks to show for it. Consider your daily walks an extension of your training sessions. Take this opportunity to reinforce your role as the “alpha” in your relationship with your pup, staying in control while enjoying more time together.

Reconnect with Instincts

There’s a reason your pup loves being outside—it’s instinct! Dogs have a natural inclination to roam, explore and adventure in the wild. Daily walks offer your pup the physical and mental stimulation they need to reconnect with their instincts by interacting with new sights, sounds and smells.

Get Social

Just like you enjoy going out and spending time with your friends, your dog needs time to be social with friends of their own species. Walking to the local dog park or even just down the street can give your pup a chance to interact with other dogs (and humans) and become properly socialized.

Active, Healthy Lifestyle

Last but certainly not least, daily walks keep you and your dog active, which can lead to a number of health benefits for the both of you. Make sure you get to enjoy your dog’s friendship for as long as possible by keeping your walks frequent.

Morning, noon or night, your daily walks are a chance to spend quality time with your four-legged friend. No matter when you take your pup for the day’s adventure, be sure to bring DOGIPOT® SMART Litter Pick Up Bags™ with you or look for pet waste stations to clean up any messes left behind.
